Workshop A: Altered Books
Text becomes image and symbol, context and inspiration- explore the art of Altered Books. We will take old books and using the text as the jumping off point, manipulate the materials, add, subtract, cut, collage, glue, paint- whatever the best technique is to make visually manifest the themes of the book. Participants will be asked to work on their project between the 2 sessions. At the end of the workshop, participants will have a finished project- or at least the skills to finish their book on their own. Each resulting altered book will be unique, reflecting the artists' different skills, interests and responses; but all will be wonderful.
Please bring the following tools and materials to the workshop:
- A hardbound book of your choosing- no 1st editions or valuable books!- a good source of old books is library sales, yard sales, thrift shops etc.
- An Exact-o knife with #11 blade
- Extra #11 blades
- "Yes!" paste. "Yes!" paste is acid-free, non-toxic and does not cause paper to bubble. It is available at most art & craft supply stores. No glue sticks! They are less than useless.
- A brush to apply "Yes!" paste
- White glue (aka "Elmer's Glue")
- Metal edged ruler or straight edge
- Cutting matt- preferably small sized
- Scissors- also pinking shears or other edge-cutting tools as you wish
- Pencil
Optional materials (the fun part):
- Water-based paints: the homogenized acrylics sold in squeeze jars. The texture is good and their performance is good
- Brushes to apply the paints
- Colored pencils
- Beads
- Wire
- Feathers
- Fabric, bits of type, etcetc for collage
- Rubber stamps and stamp pads
- Hole punches
- Photographs- or better, copies of photographs
- Papers of varying colors and textures
- Any Bits & Bobs that strike your fancy- the scrapbooking aisles of stores have an astounding array of doodads and thingummies to use. No, Altered Books are not the same as Scrapbooking but they can share techniques and materials. The artist's response to the text of the book is what sets Altered Books on a different level than scrapbooked projects- and that is what we will be focussing on.
